But it appears that sometimes Hayden Panettiere just wants to dress in comfy clothing and earlier today she was looking far from red carpet ready.

The actress, 22, was seen leaving a supermarket with friends and appeared to have pulled on her outfit just a few moments earlier.

Hayden donned a pair of scruffy ripped shorts a green T-shirt and a pair of Ugg boots for the shopping trip.

The Heroes star appeared to have embraced the relaxed look and left the house without a scrap of makeup and had her hair scraped back into a scruffy ponytail.

And the actress also appeared to have forgotten her bra too in the quick dash to pick up some supplies.

Hayden left the store clutching a bag filled with a selection of groceries including a number of packets of chicken noodle soup.

Her scruffy appearance was a world away from her preened appearance on Wednesday night as she attended the Fireflies In The Garden screening at the Pacific Theater.

Hayden donned an asymmetrical olive green dress and wore her hair in tight curls around her face as she took to the red carpet with her co-stars including Julia Roberts.

The 'Heroes' actress was onstage ready to present the award for Best Song - which was won by Lady Gaga for 'Born This Way' - when a completely nude man appeared in front of her, who was later revealed to be Belfast-born actor David Monahan, and he insisted the stunt was not pre-planned.

Hayden Panettiere has voiced her support for President Obama’s stance on Iceland’s whaling.

In 2006, Iceland resumed its whaling operations despite a moratorium on commercial whaling established by the International Whaling Commission in 1986. While many have criticized Obama for backing down on his campaign promises to protect whales and supporting efforts to lift the ban on commercial whaling, the president is now condemning Iceland’s disregard for the moratorium. According to the Associated Press, Obama’s administration “will cite Iceland under a domestic law that allows the president to act against foreign nationals or countries who flout international animal conservation rules.” The United States has now threatened political and trade sanctions against Iceland.

Hayden Panettiere, a vegetarian and spokesperson for The Whaleman Foundation‘s Save The Whales Again campaign, has said “We commend President Obama and his administration for taking this strong action against Iceland and its barbaric whaling industry…and we urge the President to take similar action against Japan and Norway as well!” Japan and Norway continue to whale, with Japan claiming that their hunt is for research purposes, however the Obama administration has said they are especially concerned with Iceland’s hunt of endangered fin whales and exporting of whale meat to pro-whaling countries.

Hayden has also gone to Japan in defense of dolphins. She was featured in the documentary The Cove, which brought light to the annual dolphin slaughter in Taiji. In 2007, she joined activists from Surfers for Cetaceans in a peaceful protest in the waters of the cove, before they were chased out by the dolphin hunters in boats. On her decision to stand up for whales and dolphins, the actress has said “because I am in the public eye I feel the need to be a voice of worthy and important causes whose efforts impact the lives of every person on Earth. These animals are being brutally and unnecessarily slaughtered – and who are we to say to they have less of a right to exist than we do.”

Actress and vegetarian Hayden Panettiere has weighed in on the news that the U.S. government has officially condemned Iceland’s disregard for the global moratorium on whaling.

The former Heroes star applauded President Obama for taking a stand against the unnecessary and cruel practice that has been taking place since 2006 when Iceland resumed its annual whale hunt.

"We commend President Obama and his administration for taking this strong action against Iceland and its barbaric whaling industry…" said Hayden Panettiere, international spokesperson for the Save the Whales Again! Campaign and The Whaleman Foundation, "And we urge the President to take similar action against Japan and Norway as well!"According to The Whaleman Foundation, the Obama administration “is citing Iceland under a domestic law called the Pelly Amendment that allows the president to act against foreign countries who defy international conservation laws and treaties.”

And considering the current political climate in the United States, it’s refreshing to see that President Obama followed through on a campaign promise he made during his 2008 run.

New York City's Grand Central Terminal isn't typically where you'd expect to see a boxing ring, a sparing match and catch a glimpse of world champion legends, but when Hollywood's involved, you can anticipate the works.

The spectacle was for "Lights Out", a new Tuesday FX drama from executive producer Warren Leight (formerly of Law & Order: Criminal Intent) about an aging former heavyweight boxing champion struggling with finances and identity after retirement.

The story is of particular curiosity for some of the former world champions who came out for the celebration including Lennox Lewis, Micky Ward and Gerry Cooney. But all eyes were on heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, who's had his own taste of Hollywood, in the form of girlfriend, actress Hayden Panettiere. What affect will this new boxing drama have on the popularity of the sport?

I think we have tremendous media covering the sport of boxing even if boxing is a little bit lost in popularity with MMA sports. I think it's great and interesting because drama is important and in this show you have certain drama and controversy and I think people are going to be really excited to watch.

What would it take to get you to make a cameo on the show?

Me on the show? You know what, I'm playing right now a role and the role is called the Heavyweight Champion of the World. And it takes all of the time. And I love this role and it takes a lot of attention for me for the sport and I just don't want to lose the title so that's why I have to stay focused and not become an actor.

Does being a world champion add more pressure to keep the title or does it take some off because you've accomplished so much?

There is one last title left and that's the WBA title that David Haye is holding right now and I hope that this year we're going to make this fight and eventually all of the titles the Klitschko brothers going to have at once.

You're going to take over the world. Is there anything Hayden can beat you at?

She definitely can beat me at a lot of things, especially with her perfect English. We'll begin with that (laugh).

Any games?

She's actually a good golfer. She has a great swing and she's not confident enough to improve herself but I'm going to work on it. Her swing is there. She's been practicing as a child and I think on the golf course I'm getting a lot of challenge.

She's become quite a boxing fan.

She is. She's a great fan, great supporter, a great motivator. Actually, I beat up guys for her, believe it or not.

Remember when Heroes was relevant? For like eight months, that’s all anyone could talk about. It was all "Save The Cheerleader, Save The World" this and "Isn’t that Hiro something?" that. Four years later, it was canceled with barely a whimper.NBC toyed with the idea of giving the characters a one-off television movie to provide some closure, but really, not enough people were interested. All that brings me to the crux of this article. There is no Heroes movie planned. Every now and again, die hard fans try and resurrect the notion of a movie, but there’s usually little evidence to support that. Even less today.

In an interview with Zap2It, star Hayden Panettiere said she had “no idea of any intention”. She further clarified, “It would be fun to do, but I know nothing about it.” This isn’t like the Arrested Development movie. God only knows if that one will get off the ground, but whenever it comes up, whoever is asked always talks about how a script is being written and they’re trying to all organize a date. They say those things because they actually want that movie to happen. Something tells me most of the people involved here couldn’t care less, at least now that they have other shit going on.

Don’t hold your breath on this project ever coming around. Even if those involved are desperate for work, ordinarily, people tend to make films about projects that were popular over the long haul, or at least ones that slowly gained a cult following over time. Heroes never recovered after the first episode of the second season, and if anyone ever revisits the project, it will likely be a full scale reboot with new actors. Your best chance to see this cheerleader is in the upcoming Scream 4.

She tells Kate Whiting about being an Alpha female and why she decided to play real-life killer Amanda Knox in a new TV dramaHayden Panettiere is immaculately coiffed and made up, with all the self-assurance you would expect of someone who's grown up in the limelight.

Gone are the long blonde locks of the invincible cheerleader who graced our screens in Heroes for four years. Instead, the actress has a cropped look that makes her seem older than her 21 years, set off by a cream satin shirt and black leather trousers.

"It changed my life," she says of the hit sci-fi show which began in 2006 and made her a household name around the globe before it was axed in May.

"I grew up on it and I was really lucky to be involved, but it turned my life upside down."

Despite all the award nominations and success of the show, Panettiere has managed to stay grounded - something she credits to the cast and crew: "I dealt with the turmoil of new things happening in my life amongst a really great group of smart and down-to-earth people," she says.

"I had a lot of role models - people who put me back in my place if I started to wander - and a great family who keep me in line. I was surrounded by people who kept things in perspective for me."

Panettiere has been on TV in the US for most of her life - starting with a small role in 1996 in a show called Aliens In The Family.

Now, all eyes are on how she copes with life after her breakthrough role in Heroes. She's already signed up to play Meredith Kercher's killer Amanda Knox in a controversial TV film - and she'll be heard on the big screen this month voicing a young female wolf in the animation Alpha And Omega.

It's a tale of two wolves - Kate and Humphrey (Justin Long) - who are childhood friends, but have no future together as Kate, the daughter of the pack leader, must marry a fellow Alpha wolf, while Humphrey's just an Omega, there to make the pack laugh.

But when they both get captured and taken to another park to 're-populate' it, they start falling for each other on the long journey home.

The actress is no stranger to animation, having played Dot in Pixar's A Bug's Life back in 1998, but she still finds it a strange experience: "I've definitely done uncomfortable things with voices, like you're going, 'Hi-yah' or howling, but it's a very different kind of art.

"You only have your voice to represent you, so you play around with it and do things you wouldn't normally do if you were standing on camera."

Panettiere admits, like her character Kate, she has "a pretty strong personality".

"I love her sense of selflessness - she knows what she needs to do for her family, to make sure there's enough food for everyone. She has to take on responsibility that wouldn't be her choice and put aside her own happiness so the rest of the pack can be happy and live. She's a really cool character to play."

While in Heroes, Panettiere dated her co-star Milo Ventimiglia, who played Peter Petrelli and is 12 years her senior. She's now in a relationship with Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko and the pair have been pictured on holiday in Croatia and enjoying the Munich beer festival.

At 6ft 6in, he's a good 15 inches taller than her and gossip columns have dubbed them the 'odd couple'.

She's adamant, however, that like the wolves in Alpha And Omega, we should be free to choose who we fall for.

"I don't think there's any kind of stereotype where you need to be with somebody who does the same job as you, or who's from the same walk of life or looks like you, is the same height as you...," she trails off, grinning.

"Sometimes you can't help who you fall in love with. And you should be allowed to be with whoever makes you happy."

The same philosophy could perhaps be applied to choosing acting roles in Panettiere's case, for her next performance will be as the brunette murderess Amanda Knox.

She's determined, following Heroes, she won't be typecast: "I definitely look like a certain type. Having blonde hair and playing a cheerleader a couple of times, it's difficult not to get slotted and be seen as something else.

"It either takes a period of time where the image of this character dies out in people's heads, or somebody takes a chance on you playing another role, letting you show people you're not just one thing.

"I was incredibly flattered and excited when I got the call and they asked me to play her."

Panettiere's aware of the tension surrounding the film - apparently Amanda Knox is not happy about it being made and is unlikely to let the actress meet her in prison.

"I've never played somebody who's a real person, still living and in a very controversial situation, but I'm looking forward to it. It's a really great script. I don't think anyone's going to be offended or upset with the way this film is put together."

And with that the actress, who clearly has her blonde head screwed on tight, sets off to cuddle a fluffy wolf on the red carpet for her new film.

Lawyers fight Hayden Panettiere film

September 24 2010 - Lawyers for convicted murderer Amanda Knox are reportedly trying to stop an upcoming film starring Hayden Panettiere.

It was reported earlier this week that Heroes star Panettiere had signed to play Knox in a Lifetime TV movie based on the Italian trial of the 21-year-old student and her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito.

Knox and Sollecito were convicted of murdering British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy. However, the pair have always maintained their innocence and are currently challenging their prison sentences.

Maria Del Grosso, Knox's defence attorney, said of The Amanda Knox Story: "It is inconceivable to make a film when a final verdict on this case has not been reached."

Sollecito's lawyer Giulia Bongiorno commented: "If the film is shown before the end of the appeals trial we will request it be seized."

The appeals are due to be heard in court later this year, while the Lifetime project is currently slated for a 2011 airdate.

New 'Biofuel Cell' Produces Electricity From Hydrogen In Plain Air

A pioneering "biofuel cell" that produces electricity from ordinary air spiked with small amounts of hydrogen offers significant potential as an inexpensive and renewable alternative to the costly platinum-based fuel cells that have dominated discussion about the "hydrogen economy" of the future, British scientists reported here today.

The research was presented at the week-long 233rd national meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society.

Fraser Armstrong, Ph.D., described how his research group at Oxford University built the biofuel cell with hydrogenases -- enzymes from naturally occurring bacteria that use or oxidize hydrogen in their metabolism. The cell consists of two electrodes coated with the enzymes placed inside a container of ordinary air with 3 percent added hydrogen.

That is just below the 4 percent danger level at which hydrogen becomes an explosion hazard. The research established for the first time that it is possible to generate electricity from such low levels of hydrogen in air, Armstrong said.

Prototype versions of the cell produced enough electricity to power a wristwatch and other electronic devices. Armstrong foresees advanced versions of the device as potential power sources for an array of other electronic products that only require low amounts of power.

"The technology is immensely developable," Armstrong said. "We are at the tip of a large iceberg, with important consequences for the future, but there is still much to do before this generation of enzyme-based fuel cells becomes commercially viable. The idea of electricity from hydrogen in air, using an oxygen-tolerant hydrogenase is new, although other scientists have been investigating enzymes as electrocatalysts for years. Most hydrogenases have fragile active sites that are destroyed by even traces of oxygen, but oxygen tolerant hydrogenases have evolved to resist attack."

The biofuel cell has a number of advantages over conventional fuel cells, devices that convert the chemical energy in a fuel into electricity without combustion, Fraser explained. A hydrogen fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen, producing water as the only waste product. Platinum is the most commonly used catalyst in conventional (proton exchange membrane) fuel cells, making the devices an expensive alternative energy source with sharply limited uses.

As a precious metal, platinum is in short supply, raising questions about the sustainability of platinum-based fuel cell technology. Platinum is more costly than gold, with recent prices topping $1,000 per ounce. In addition, platinum catalysts are easily poisoned or inactivated by carbon monoxide that often exists as an impurity in industrially produced hydrogen. Carbon monoxide can be removed, but that further increases the cost of conventional fuel cells.

Armstrong pointed out that naturally occurring hydrogenase enzymes can be produced at lower cost, with carbon-monoxide poisoning not being a problem. Since the hydrogenases are chemically selective and tolerant, they work in mixtures of hydrogen and oxygen, avoiding the need for expensive fuel-separation membranes required in other types of fuel cells. Hydrogenases also work at about the same rate as platinum-based catalysts.

The biofuel cell uses enzymes from Ralstonia metallidurans (R. metallidurans), an ancient bacterium believed to have been one of the first forms of life on Earth. It evolved 2.5 billion years ago, when there was no oxygen in Earth's atmosphere, and survived by metabolizing hydrogen.

One focus of Armstrong's research is understanding how the active site of the R. metallidurans hydrogenase developed the ability to cope with oxygen as Earth's atmosphere changed. That could enable scientists to adapt the chemistry in the active site -- the working end of the enzyme -- into biofuel cells that are more tolerant of oxygen. In the current version of the cell, the enzyme is not attached tightly to the electrode and the cell runs for only about two days. The researchers also are investigating the use of enzymes from other organisms.

Research Advances Understanding Of How Hydrogen Fuel Is Made

Oxygen may be necessary for life, but it sure gets in the way of making hydrogen fuel cheaply and abundantly from a family of enzymes present in many microorganisms. Blocking oxygen’s path to an enzyme’s production machinery could lead to a renewable energy source that would generate only water as its waste product.

Researchers at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have opened a window by way of computer simulation that lets them see how and where hydrogen and oxygen travel to reach and exit an enzyme’s catalyst site – the H cluster – where the hydrogen is converted into energy.

The Illinois scientists and three colleagues from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo., detailed their findings in the September issue of the journal Structure. What they found could help solve a long-standing economics problem. Because oxygen permanently binds to hydrogen in the H cluster, the production of hydrogen gas is halted. As a result, the supply is short-lived.

Numerous microorganisms have enzymes known as hydrogenases that simply use sunlight and water to generate hydrogen-based energy.

“Understanding how oxygen reaches the active site will provide insight into how hydrogenase’s oxygen tolerance can be increased through protein engineering, and, in turn, make hydrogenase an economical source of hydrogen fuel,” said Klaus Schulten, Swanlund Professor of Physics at Illinois and leader of the Beckman’s Theoretical Biophysics Group.

Using computer modeling developed in Schulten’s lab – Nanoscale Molecular Dynamics (NAMD) and Visual Molecular Dynamics (VMD) – physics doctoral student Jordi Cohen created an all-atom simulation model based on the crystal structure of hydrogenase CpI from Clostridium pasteurianum.

This model allowed Cohen to visualize and track how oxygen and hydrogen travel to the hydrogenase’s catalytic site, where the gases bind, and what routes the molecules take as they exit. Using a new computing concept, he was able to describe gas diffusion through the protein and predict accurately the diffusion paths typically taken.

“What we discovered was surprising,” Schulten said. “Both hydrogen and oxygen diffuse through the protein rather quickly, yet, there are clear differences.”

Oxygen requires a bit more space compared with the lighter and smaller hydrogen, staying close to few well localized fluctuating channels. The hydrogen gas traveled more freely. Because the protein is more porous to hydrogen than to oxygen, the hydrogen diffused through the oxygen pathways but also through entirely new pathways closed to oxygen, the researchers discovered.

The researchers concluded that it could be possible to close the oxygen pathways of hydrogenase through genetic modification of the protein and, thereby, increase the tolerance of hydrogenases to oxygen without disrupting the release of hydrogen gas.

Co-authors with Schulten and Cohen were Kwiseon Kim, Paul King and Michael Seibert, all of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy funded the research.

Hydrogen is released during the conversion of ethane and propane to ethylene and propylene, raw materials for the production of plastics. Using oxygen from a so-called oxygen sponge to convert hydrogen into water saves a lot of energy during the production process.

The oxygen sponge only reacts with the hydrogen released and not with other compounds in the chemical reaction, such as ethane and propane. This allows more starting materials to be converted in one cycle and makes the separation of the starting material and product both easier and cheaper. This new process therefore saves a lot of energy.

The majority of ethylene and propylene is made from ethane and propane, produced during the cracking of crude oil. Ethane and propane are converted into ethylene and propylene plus hydrogen in a reactor vessel at a very high temperature.

Unfortunately, this chemical reaction is an equilibrium reaction. This means that although ethylene and propylene are formed, the starting materials are not completely used up in the reaction. The product produced is therefore contaminated. It costs a lot of energy to separate the starting materials and products, and to return the starting materials left to the reactor.

Bart de Graaf developed a process which directly removes one of the products from the equilibrium reaction. Using an oxygen sponge to convert the hydrogen released into water allows the reaction to continue until most of the starting materials have been used up.

New Way To Split Water Into Hydrogen And Oxygen Developed

ScienceDaily (Apr. 8, 2009) — The design of efficient systems for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen, driven by sunlight is among the most important challenges facing science today, underpinning the long term potential of hydrogen as a clean, sustainable fuel. But man-made systems that exist today are very inefficient and often require additional use of sacrificial chemical agents. In this context, it is important to establish new mechanisms by which water splitting can take place.

Now, a unique approach developed by Prof. David Milstein and colleagues of the Weizmann Institute’s Organic Chemistry Department, provides important steps in overcoming this challenge. During this work, the team demonstrated a new mode of bond generation between oxygen atoms and even defined the mechanism by which it takes place. In fact, it is the generation of oxygen gas by the formation of a bond between two oxygen atoms originating from water molecules that proves to be the bottleneck in the water splitting process. Their results have recently been published in Science.

Nature, by taking a different path, has evolved a very efficient process: photosynthesis – carried out by plants – the source of all oxygen on Earth. Although there has been significant progress towards the understanding of photosynthesis, just how this system functions remains unclear; vast worldwide efforts have been devoted to the development of artificial photosynthetic systems based on metal complexes that serve as catalysts, with little success. (A catalyst is a substance that is able to increase the rate of a chemical reaction without getting used up.)

The new approach that the Weizmann team has recently devised is divided into a sequence of reactions, which leads to the liberation of hydrogen and oxygen in consecutive thermal- and light-driven steps, mediated by a unique ingredient – a special metal complex that Milstein’s team designed in previous studies. Moreover, the one that they designed – a metal complex of the element ruthenium – is a ‘smart’ complex in which the metal center and the organic part attached to it cooperate in the cleavage of the water molecule.

The team found that upon mixing this complex with water the bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms break, with one hydrogen atom ending up binding to its organic part, while the remaining hydrogen and oxygen atoms (OH group) bind to its metal center.

This modified version of the complex provides the basis for the next stage of the process: the ‘heat stage.’ When the water solution is heated to 100 degrees C, hydrogen gas is released from the complex – a potential source of clean fuel – and another OH group is added to the metal center.

‘But the most interesting part is the third ‘light stage,’’ says Milstein. ‘When we exposed this third complex to light at room temperature, not only was oxygen gas produced, but the metal complex also reverted back to its original state, which could be recycled for use in further reactions.’

These results are even more remarkable considering that the generation of a bond between two oxygen atoms promoted by a man-made metal complex is a very rare event, and it has been unclear how it can take place. Yet Milstein and his team have also succeeded in identifying an unprecedented mechanism for such a process. Additional experiments have indicated that during the third stage, light provides the energy required to cause the two OH groups to get together to form hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which quickly breaks up into oxygen and water. ‘Because hydrogen peroxide is considered a relatively unstable molecule, scientists have always disregarded this step, deeming it implausible; but we have shown otherwise,’ says Milstein. Moreover, the team has provided evidence showing that the bond between the two oxygen atoms is generated within a single molecule – not between oxygen atoms residing on separate molecules, as commonly believed – and it comes from a single metal center.

Discovery of an efficient artificial catalyst for the sunlight-driven splitting of water into oxygen and hydrogen is a major goal of renewable clean energy research. So far, Milstein’s team has demonstrated a mechanism for the formation of hydrogen and oxygen from water, without the need for sacrificial chemical agents, through individual steps, using light. For their next study, they plan to combine these stages to create an efficient catalytic system, bringing those in the field of alternative energy an important step closer to realizing this goal.

If anyone is around midtown this afternoon, super smokin’ Victoria’s Secret angel, Miranda Kerr (AKA Orlando Bloom’s GF) will be doing a meet and greet with fans at the Secret store on Lexington Avenue and 58th St. at 5PM. According to a press release, Miranda will be showing off her world famous cleavage in “a beautiful medley of garden and ballet themes with romantic pastels and silk satin fabrics.” I’m going to be there, so come make me feel like less of a creep by lurking outside of the Victoria’s Secret with me.
